Historic Chess Gold in SEA games

Malaysia’s “almost” GM (one more norm!), International Master Yeoh Li Tian made history as he won Malaysia’s first chess gold medal in SEA Games history on Tuesday.

The historic event took place at the Traveler’s Hotel in Subic. Li Tian made it look easy going 4.5 out of 5 but of course the tail end of the rounds would get considerably harder.

The 20-year-old had to meet vastly stronger on paper, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son in the final round. Both have already far outpaced the others in in the field. It was a nail biting game as Malaysian fans watched live online as Li Tian not only equalised but offered a draw from a position of strength. He finished with a score of 6.5 points equal with the Vietnamese GM he just drew but Li Tian had the edge on tie break bringing him the coveted gold! Just as context, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son won two gold and one bronze the last time chess was contested at the SEA Games in 2013.

GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son took silver and GM Nguyen Anh Khoi took home bronze.
